This question often gets asked after wearing hearing devices for the first time (especially custom-made molded devices). The simple answer: bone conduction.
Check out the short video from Mental Floss that describes it in more depth:
Hear why it's so important that your hearing device automatically adapt to your changing environment. The different acoustics are stunning.

By far our most popular blog post of 2014 was the one analyzing what Adam Savage had to say about his hearing.

Watch the video podcast and listen to what he has to say. In honor of it being our most-viewed post of the year, we're dropping the cost of his hearing aids by $350!
What was once $4800 rose to $5000 but is now $4450.
This month only.

McGurk Effect:
The McGurk effect is a perceptual phenomenon that demonstrates an interaction between hearing and vision in speech perception. The illusion occurs when the auditory component of one sound is paired with the visual component of another sound, leading to the perception of a third sound. The visual information a person gets from seeing a person speak changes the way they hear the sound. People who are used to watching dubbed movies may be among people who are not susceptible to the McGurk effect because they have, to some extent, learned to ignore the information they are getting from the mouths of the "speakers".
Many clients score highly when given a word test where they can see the speakers face. However, when we place a piece of paper in front of the speakers mouth, the score often drops considerably. Doing well with one-on-one conversations doesn't mean there isn't considerable hearing loss.
Here is a picture of a hearing aid speaker:
It's the tiny piece at the bottom right, at the end of each wire. Small, right?
Now click here and read/watch this beautiful animagraff that shows how speakers work.
That's what almost everyone says after putting on hearing devices for the first time. Is it because the hearing aids aren't working correctly? No, actually. Improperly programmed hearing aids would likely not affect your voice at all. Here's why:
Wow. That's certainly loud.

Oticon recently released an update to it's Inium platform of hearing devices. The designRITE style may remind you of the Oticon Intiga (which was based on the older RISE2 platform). They look virtually the same, however the designRITE is built a little sturdier and uses an upgraded speaker system.
The new designRITE style is available in all of the 'Pro' models on the Inium platform (namely Ria Pro, Nera Pro, and Alta Pro). Unlike the miniRITE style, designRITE uses a size 10 battery and does not have a volume control switch.
Many people like keeping as much control of their volume is possible -- but is that really necessary? When it comes to the latest hearing devices, including Oticon's Inium products, a volume control isn't necessary. These devices change, by themselves, based on sound changes in your environment. However, these small devices that do not have built-in volume control buttons have small remote control accessories available if you desire both small design and full functionality.
No problem! Chances are you won't find better prices than these. If you do, let us know and we will beat them.
Ria Pro - $1,350 prices are listed as single unit prices
Nera Pro - $1,999
Alta Pro - $2,795
Bluetooth Remote - $325
Standard Remote - $275
It's November in Texas - and that means deer hunting. The loud noise from shooting a gun can irreparably damage your hearing, but in order to hunt you really need to hear! You need to hear the people next to you, the rustle of the leaves, the animals in the vicinity - nature.
Serious hunters need digital ear protection. What is digital ear protection? It's a custom ear mold that includes both an amplifier for hearing noises around you and fast digital compression that will suppress the sounds of the guns (and other very loud noises) around you.
Unlike traditional passive hearing protection, the advanced circuitry embedded in digital ear protection actually enhances low-level sounds instead of blocking them. You can carry a conversation, detect game, and hear your surroundings while still being protected from gunshot noise. Since custom protection is made just for your unique ears - it's the most comfortable protection you can wear.
The highest end devices include advanced technology for suppressing wind noise. You can find more information, including pricing, on our Device page, here. Unlike other companies, we are advertising the very best, most expensive technology you can buy. Other, more affordable options exist, so don't hesitate to contact us for more detailed information.
